Force still regenerates when saber is dropped. If this is to counter that horrible saber-dropped-while-gripped mechanic then a better solution would be to make it so saber can return to someone being gripped (so all saber styles would perform as half-staff saber style does during grips).

Why shouldn't it? The saber doesn't generate the force power, and Luke didn't get eaten by the wampa. I don't really see any reason it shouldn't (if I remember right, I fixed this as a bug some time ago).
